A Brief History

The Escola de Geometria Diferencial was conceived by Manfredo Perdigão do Carmo, with its first edition organized by the Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA) in Rio de Janeiro in 1974. This event marked the beginning of a new phase in Brazilian research in differential geometry. Several recently graduated PhDs, returning from studies abroad, played a key role in establishing research groups at institutes and universities in cities such as Brasília, Campinas, Fortaleza, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo.

Since its inception, the School has pursued its mission of fostering collaboration between national and international researchers and promoting the training of new geometers. Held every two years, it rotates among universities across the country, often prioritizing institutions where the field is still developing, reflecting a commitment to consolidating and renewing differential geometry in Brazil. Recent editions have been hosted by institutions with diverse academic profiles, highlighting the School’s inclusive approach.

Each edition features plenary sessions with internationally renowned researchers. Participation of Brazilian geometers at all career stages is encouraged through conferences, oral presentations, and poster sessions, selected by committees based on scientific relevance and regional representation. The School emphasizes scientific training through both basic and advanced mini-courses, attracting participants ranging from undergraduate students to professors.
